“50 Best Courses In South Carolina” Announced

Greenville, SC – March 17, 2008 – Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort remains regally atop the rankings of the state’s best courses according to the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel. Designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus in 1969, Harbour Town has now been chosen the best course in the state four consecutive years.

Forty years after Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus traded ideas that became the blueprint for Harbour Town it still remains their highest rated course in the Palmetto state… but, it’s great for golf and the state that they keep trying to top themselves with each new design. As a result, Dye and Nicklaus each landed new courses in the panel’s list of South Carolina’s 50 Best courses.

The Nicklaus-designed Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, SC recorded a soaring debut at No. 13. Heron Point by Pete Dye, located alongside Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island, was also a highly impressive newcomer breaking in at No. 25.

Dye and Nicklaus now join Tom Fazio as the most prolific architects of the “very best of the best” in South Carolina, each with four courses in the top half of the 50 Best list.

The only course to break into the Top 10 was Secession Golf Club, in Beaufort. The Bruce Devlin designed walking-only course moved from No. 11 to No. 9.

Other climbs of note within the 50 Best include a jump from No. 24 to No. 16 by the Country Club of Charleston, which is clearly the better for a 2006 major renovation of Seth Raynor’s 1926 creation. Arnold Palmer’s Musgrove Mill Golf Club, in Clinton, rose five places to No. 11, a good start to a year in which the club will host the South Carolina Golf Association’s state amateur championship.

The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel consists of up to 125 members representing all facets of the game and all levels of playing abilities. Ratings are conducted by a closed vote with results tabulated once voting has closed.

Panel executive director, Michael Whitaker, praised the emphasis on tradition that came with the highest ranked new courses on the list. “It’s exciting to see new course construction and major remodels in South Carolina emphasizing the original design concepts of the old masters,” he says. “Ground game features are being reintroduced to our game and our panelists obviously welcome the variety of options presented when they step over the ball. This is a great trend.”

Background On SC Golf Course Ratings Panel

Overview

The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel is composed of golf enthusiasts representing a diverse range of occupations, handicaps and backgrounds. These individuals have been charged with the task of identifying the best that South Carolina golf has to offer.

Objective and Purpose

The objective of the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel is to promote excellence in SC golf course design and operations through competitive rankings, education and public advocacy. The Panel serves as an ambassador for golf in South Carolina by striving to stimulate and facilitate the promotion and marketing of the outstanding golf courses, resorts, and real estate developments.

1)      New Course Of The Year - As new courses open during the year Panelists are asked to evaluate and "rate" them. The results of these ratings are used to recognize courses for outstanding achievement in course design. These awards are presented annually.

2)      South Carolina’s 50 Best Courses – Bi-annually (in even-numbered years) members of the Panel identify their choices for the “50 Best Courses” in the state, public or private.

3)      The Best Courses You Can Play – Bi-annually (in odd-numbered years) the Panel releases a listing of the best non-private courses in the state. Every resort, public access, and daily-fee course is eligible for this elite listing.

How We Rate Them

In determining their ratings panelists consider the following criteria:

  • Routing – How the course flows from hole to hole in harmony with existing topography.
  • Variety – Degree to which the course demands a full range of shot requirements.
  • Strategy – How design features test course management.
  • Equity – The course’s capacity to reward good shots and penalize poor ones.
  • Memorability – The distinctiveness of the golf course and its individual holes.
  • Aesthetics – The degree to which scenery and surrounds lend to the enjoyment.
  • Experience – Incorporates all elements of the course: practice areas, clubhouse and more.

Structure

The Panel consists of a maximum of 125 members, 8 of which serve as Regional Directors. Twenty-five percent of the panel represents each of the following geographical regions:  The Upstate, The Midlands, The Lowcountry, and The Grand Strand. Twenty percent of the panel are women. The governing body of the Panel is its Board of Directors, consisting of the eight Regional Directors plus two at-large members.
